Material Selection Guide

Material Best For Typical Strength Typical Trade-off
Silicon Steel 50/60Hz transformers, laminations, motor cores Cost-effective, proven supply chain Not ideal at very high frequency
Ferrite High-frequency transformers/inductors, EMC Low eddy current loss, easy shaping Brittle; saturation limits depend on grade
Permalloy Shielding, precision sensors, instrumentation Very high permeability Higher cost; processing control is key
Amorphous High-efficiency cores, reduced losses Very low core loss Material handling and forming complexity
Nanocrystalline High-current chokes, wide-band performance Great balance of loss/permeability Cost higher than ferrite/silicon steel

FAQ

What is the difference between soft magnets and permanent magnets?
Soft magnetic materials are meant to be magnetized and demagnetized easily with low hysteresis loss (used in cores and shielding). Permanent magnets (NdFeB/SmCo/Ferrite PM) maintain magnetization to provide constant magnetic force.
Which soft magnetic material is best for high frequency?
Ferrite is commonly used for high frequency power electronics and EMI suppression. For higher efficiency or special designs, amorphous or nanocrystalline cores may be better depending on your current, temperature, and loss targets.
What do you need to recommend the right core?
Core type/dimensions, frequency & waveform, target inductance/flux/current, operating temperature, and quantity. If you have the circuit topology (e.g., LLC/flyback/PFC), include it for faster optimization.
Can you supply custom shapes and assemblies?
Yes. We support standard cores (E/U/EI/toroid) and custom geometries. For assemblies, share your stack/fixture requirements and insulation needs.
